About me

My journey into photography.

My interest in photography started with parenthood. I quickly became deeply interested in an art form I had previously not had much appreciation for. I found I was discovering something about how I relate to the world around me by developing my own visual language. I love photographing people so I learnt by going out and shooting street portraits, first in a digital format and then switching to film once I had learned the rudiments. I still shoot on the street whenever I can, especially when I travel. The language barrier and cultural differences only make the challenge more rewarding. For my personal projects I shoot black and white film (mostly) and develop and print at home in my darkroom at the bottom of the garden. I am also a musician and after completing my music degree I worked as a music practitioner in a mental health setting and am currently a part-time music teacher at a performing arts school. This experience really helps with my portrait photography because while the technical stuff is vital, so are people-skills. My ability to empathise with other human beings has been crucial to my success in both music and photography.  If you're interested, check out some of my street stuff linked below or find me on instagram @streetcameraguy.
